EPR Techniques:
DNP

Research Areas:
inorganic semiconductors

My research interests are centered around inorganic solid state semiconductors, namely GaAs and AlGaAs multiple quantum well films. My group will often strain these materials by bonding them to materials which have different lattice constants and lowering the temperature. We are able to dynamically polarize nuclei through the application of laser light and study the enhanced polarization via ordinary NMR. I want to join the Shared EPR network in order to learn about the research advances in EPR.

The SMART Center provides training in EPR to middle and high school students. Essential to this process is the basic
understanding of solid experimental design and
legitimate data collection and analysis as well as
the ability to draw valid conclusions. Students plan their own research projects and generate original data with the potential for presentation to the scientific community.

As a visiting scientist at ACERT, Cornell University, my research focus on studying protein conformations in the presence of denaturants and maesuring inter-site distance in protein-lipid compositions through EPR spectroscopy. Participating within SharedEPR network is an excellent opportunity to connect and learn from other researchers and build my own expertise.

Our research focuses on understanding the structure/function relationship on nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid complexes. We develop a biophysical tool, called site-directed spin labeling (SDSL), to probe structural and dynamics of nucleic acids, and we combine SDSL and other biochemical and biophysical approaches to investigate specific systems that function in fundamental biological processes.

I am a condensed matter experimentalist specializing in Terahertz science and technology (0.1-10 THz). I am also director of UC Santa Barbara's Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology (ITST). We have at UCSB a home-built 240 GHz EPR spectrometer that can run in cw and pulsed modes. In pulsed mode, we can run either with ~50 mW pulses from a solid-state source, or several hundred Watts from a Free-Electron Laser. We welcome visitors and collaborators in the wonderful EPR community!

My original area of EPR research was the study of radical anions of organosilyl- and organogermyl-substituted aromatics. For the past 25 years I have had an on-going research collaboration with the research group of Dr. Ronald Mason at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in the general area of free radical metabolites of xenobiotic compounds. I have maintained a modest EPR research program at with undergraduate coworkers at Hampden-Sydney College.along those lines.
