EPR Techniques:
cw EPR, DEER / PELDOR, ESEEM / HYSCORE, pulse EPR

Research Areas:
membrane proteins, nitroxides

I found membrane proteins and their interactions with lipid bilayers as one of the most intriguing fields of research. That is why I decided to work in this field for my PhD degree. EPR is one of the best techniques to investigate membrane proteins, their structures, their interactions with lipid bilayers, etc.
I believe SharedEPR network will provide priceless opportunities to meet experts in this field, collaborate with EPR researchers around the country and get access to advanced facilities

As a bourgeoning scientist, it is important to me to contribute to the field of research and also better it if I am able to do so. Through my continued studies I hope I can contribute to the development and refinement of EPR techniques and further the use of EPR as a tool for understanding protein dynamics. It is my desire to continue studying protein dynamics beyond my graduate career, therefore, developing a firm foundation in EPR is of utmost importance as I build my career as a scientist.

I took over the position of Assistant Director at the Magnetic Resonance Center (MRC) at BC last year, and the majority of my duties are centered on assisting students with their experiments on our EMX-Plus EPR spectrometer. I have been assisting students with acquiring routine EPR spectra of organic radicals and nitroxides, as well as guiding them through the process of EPR simulations, as I concurrently hone the art myself.

We are examining EPR for use as a real-time sensor of multi-phase fluids (namely crude oil with some salty water, gas, and dissolved solids). We have hand-built a rough-and-ready EPR machine but we can surely benefit from lessons learned by the community. Main challenges we face are signal-to-noise and system calibration over a broad operating range (our incoming fluids can be up to 5ksi and 120degC).

Our lab's research is focused on understanding the physics of materials and structures with extremely long electron spin coherence. One of the main applications is the development of devices for quantum simulation and quantum computing. Long coherence requires very dilute systems, pushing the limits of sensitivity and stability. Some of the experiments must be run at milliKelvin temperatures and microwatt power levels, for which we are developing superconducting microresonators.

Allosteric drugs have the ability to fine-tune cellular response and direct cell signaling towards a particular pathway for the largest class of druggable proteins, G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). I use continuous wave and DEER EPR spectroscopies to study GPCRs in the presence of allosteric ligands, to identify the mechanism of the allosteric response, and inform future rational drug design.
