My research interests focus on using EPR and other biophysical tools to study the structure and structure-function relationships of macromolecules, as well as developing methods and biological applications of multi-frequency and pulsed EPR. My current work involves structural analyses of membrane proteins and characterizing protein-membrane interactions. I am managing a X-/W-band Bruker E680 spectrometer and a W-band HiPER spectrometer at the NHMFL, which are open to outside researchers.

My research group specializes in pulse EPR and works in several areas: (1) mapping conformational landscapes of membrane proteins using DEER spectroscopy, (2) investigating the identity and structure of paramagnetic intermediates in enzymatic reactions, (3) characterizing the structure and dynamics of energy materials, (4) developing new instrumentation and computational methods for EPR, including the simulation software EasySpin (easyspin.org).

The biophysics research in my laboratory in the Department of Physics at Emory University focuses on elucidation of the fundamental contributions of molecular structure and dynamics to assembly and reactivity in protein systems, by using time-resolved and cw-EPR methods and unique low-T systems. EPR instrumentation includes a home-constructed X- and Ku-band pulsed-EPR spectrometer and a Bruker E500 X- and Q-band CW-EPR spectrometer (EPR & ENDOR).

My research focuses on developing high-field (240 GHz) EPR instrumentation and methodologies. The experiment I work on is based around the UCSB mm-wave free electron laser (FEL) as a source of high power microwave radiation, to perform pulsed EPR at high field with short pulse lengths. In addition, I study high-field relaxation mechanisms in nitroxides and in gadolinium centers. I am interested broadening my knowledge of EPR techniques, and in connecting with my colleges.
