I am deeply involved in EPR research since 1985 and played a key role in the development of original methods in site directed spin labeling and nitroxide scanning. Work involved lineshape analysis, accessibility using power saturation and saturation recovery, distance measurements using CW and pulse methods, as well as synthesizing massive amounts of local results into the understanding of global structure and function. A rich collection of software written in LabVIEW is available.

My research group builds single-chip EPR transceivers in silicon/CMOS. The single-chip solution has two major benefits:

1) It can be easily scaled to wave-scaled EPR arrays enabling reliable fabrication of 1000s of EPR spectrometers.
2) Silicon/CMOS fabrication technology can reduce the cost of EPR spectrometers to below $100 in high-volumes.

My team also works on low-cost single-chip sources and detectors in the THz frequencies that can be used in high-field EPR.

Research Areas:

I am interested in the thermodynamics of the coupling between proteins and their solvating hydration water. To access the thermodynamics I employ a combination of EPR and NMR techniques mainly focusing in relaxometry. My current goal is to access energy scales in the protein water coupling phenomena from EPR noise spectroscopy.

Research Areas:

My background is in relaxation measurements (T1,T2) of organic radicals in aqueous phase (250 MHz - 34 GHz) and development of rapid scan EPR imaging at 250 MHz. As a post doc I gained experience constructing my own instrumentation for low-field solution DNP. I am now at a contract R&D firm and am championing low-field electromagnetics as an answer to many materials characterization problems. I have an interest in expansion and development of in-situ EPR.

Our research efforts have been directed at the use of spectroscopic methods, such as EPR spectroscopy, to determine the structures and structural transitions in membrane transport proteins and proteins involved in neuronal exocytosis. We have also made extensive use of EPR based methods to characterize the mechanisms of reversible protein-membrane interactions, and to examine the dynamics and conformational equilibria in membrane proteins.
